There are many reasons why fans are having fun Buffy the Vampire Slayer so much, from the compelling characters to the extremely quotable dialogue. And of course, all the great romances fueled by the hottest on-screen chemistry in network television history. For many, there was no greater chemistry than that between Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, but their steamiest scenes weren’t as sexy during production for a very strange reason: whenever Buffy and Angel kissed, their breath was absolutely terrible because of Gellar’s insane pranks.
This bizarre ritual between Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz goes back to their first Buffy kiss in the Season 1 episode “Angel”. In an unforgettable moment, Angel reveals his feelings for Buffy and kisses her… leading to the revelation that he is a vampire in love with a Slayer who has been charged with hunting and killing his own kind. But thanks to Joss Whedon’s DVD commentary, we know the scene was just as memorable for the actors for a completely different reason: “They both ate as many horrible things as they could before they kissed, just for fun.”
While Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz first tried to prank each other during it Buffy kiss, it was apparently Gellar who kept the tradition going whenever they had to be physically intimate with each other on screen. Her clear goal (sorry, ‘shippers) was to make their sex scenes as “unsexy” as she could, and the main way she did that was to eat weird things before the on-screen smooching started. This included nasty combinations like cucumbers and fish that ensured her breath smelled worse than a vampire coffin before Buffy and Angel even locked lips.
Sometimes Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t content with sabotaging her breath before the Buffy/Angel kiss and opted for other hilarious pranks instead. A great example of this is her deliberately pinning her clothes very tightly together before scenes where their characters were supposed to be hot and heavy. Poor David Boreanaz would have to keep their on-screen intimacy looking naughty and nice while chatting up a costar whose clothes were glued very firmly in place.
On another occasion, Sarah Michelle Gellar decided to prank David Boreanaz on his own show with a prank on Angel episode “I Will Remember You” where Buffy and Angel did it many more than a kiss This was the episode where the vampire turned human, allowing him and Buffy to finally do the deed without losing his soul. Unfortunately, he discovers that the world needs his vampire power and turns back time to become a creature of the night once again. It’s a powerful and emotional episode until you learn that Gellar intentionally spilled ice cream on Boreanaz while trying to ruin one of his shots.
It might ruin the magic if we find out that Sarah Michelle Gellar was trying to screw everyone up Buffy a kiss with Angel with bad breath and other pranks, but this particular story has something different. All the pranks actually helped the two actors bond and they continued to see each other and have a lot of fun even after Boreanaz started acting in the film Bones. He’d invite her on set so they could have crafting services together, which might never have happened if Gellar hadn’t decided to eat the world the nastiest food before chatting with one of the grossest guys on TV.
