Boxing results: Justis Huni dominates Shaun Potgieter by TKO in the second round

Heavyweight contender Justis Huni (12-0, 7 KOs) scored an easy second-round TKO over Shaun Potgieter (10-2, 7 KOs) on Wednesday night’s Jai Opetaia vs. David Nyika at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia.

Huni, 25, hurt South African Potgieter with a right hand to the head in the second round. He then landed several harder blows and referee Phil Austin intervened and stopped the fight. The stoppage time was at 0:33 of the second round.

Australian Huni looked slow but powerful with his right hand. He didn’t have to worry about Potgieter saying anything back, which was lucky for him. It would be interesting to know why Potgieter was chosen for Huni because he didn’t look fit and looked quite old.

Huni had really struggled to beat Kevin Lerena last year in March and he lit him up during their 10-round fight. He barely won that fight. Tonight was more about giving Huni a softer opponent to make him look good.

It is too early to know how far Huni can go in this sport. He has to be ranked high enough to get a world title shot and get a big payday. He doesn’t seem ready to fight the big dogs in the division, like IBF champion Daniel Dubois.

“The more active I am, the better I will be. I have some injuries to take care of, but as soon as possible I will return to the ring,” said Justis Huni. DAZN following his second-round knockout of Shaun Potgieter on Wednesday night.

“I’ll leave it to my team. They have done a good job with me so far. “I think I can go all the way.”

It would be nice to see Justis take on Moses Itauma. It would be a fun fight between the two hard punchers. They are both similar in the way they move at a slow pace and are easy to hit.

“This guy is almost there. You have another potential heavyweight champion in Justis Huni. He is in the top 15 in three governing bodies,” Eddie Hearn said. “The strength and conditioning team has done a great job. The speed is back.

“Confidence has returned. As he said, he is recovering from a small injury. You’ll see him again in a few months. A huge 2025 for Justis Huni.
