There’s no rhyme or reason to what would become a streaming hit, a recent box office bomb Horizon: An American Saga and Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga becoming a hit on Netflix makes some sense, but it’s amazing that a historical adventure In the heart of the seabox office flop of 2015, joined them. The Ron Howard-directed film grossed just $25 million in theaters, but streaming success is increasingly important these days. With a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland and Cillian Murphy, it’s no wonder that curious subscribers are watching the film.

Inspiration for Moby Dick

In the heart of the sea

In the heart of the sea tells the story of a whaling ship, Essexattacked by a great white whale, forcing the crew to shelter in three smaller whaling boats. Adrift on the open ocean, the crew fights for survival, fighting the weather, the ocean and each other. With Ron Howard behind the camera, the story is both beautiful and harrowing, but made all the more dramatic by being based on a true story.

The Essex was a real whaling ship that sank in 1820 with only a handful of survivors, but two of them, first mate Chase Owens and deck boy Thomas Nickerson, eventually wrote about the incident when they returned home to Nantucket. In the heart of the sea is a dramatic retelling of their accounts that adapts the nonfiction book of the same name by historian Nathaniel Philbrick. In case you are wondering, whale which brought down the ship, described as a “great white whale”, helped inspire Herman Melville when he wrote Moby Dickwhich you probably never knew was partially based on a true story.

Saved from obscurity by the Superstar cast

Chris Hemsworth in In the heart of the sea

It’s not classic literature fans who drive In the heart of the sea to the top of Netflix streaming chart, but instead it was the increased star power of the three leads. Over the past decade since the film’s original release, Chris Hemsworth has become a household name as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland is Spider-Man and it made Cillian Murphy famous Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer. In 2015, while Hemsworth was already playing Thor Avengershe wasn’t a solo draw, and Holland landed the role of Peter Parker thanks in part to his performance as Nickerson, the shack.

Future superstars did not take In the heart of the sea easy, partly because of the extreme physical demands of playing men stranded on the open ocean and partly because of Ron Howard’s decision to bring the storm to them. Instead of relying entirely on CGI, Howard shot the cast with cold water cannons on the deck of the ship to give them a real feel of being tossed about by the fury of the ocean. Hemsworth called the film the hardest and most demanding performance of his career, but he was rewarded and critics praised his performance upon release.

While critics enjoyed the film, it suffered from a poor release date where it was clearly intended as counter-programming to Warner Bros., a studio that can’t seem to get anything right. IN Heart of the seaold-fashioned historical drama, premiered on December 11, 2015, a week before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, one of the most successful films in human history. It turns out that the film was simply ahead of its time, and the actors who became superstars sparked interest in their past work, and the adventure of survival on the high seas is a better option than watching. Black hat.

In the heart of the sea now streaming on Netflix.
