Maria Shriver from her own mother she learned the important act of respect, Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
“I make them stand up (when I enter the room),” Maria, 69, said of her four children when she appeared on Wednesday, August 8. Hoda Kotb‘with “Making Space” podcast.. Maria shares Katherine, 35, Christina, 33, Patrick, 31, and Christopher, 27, with ex-husband Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“I made them. Now they just stand up,” she said.
“There are many things that I imitated from my mother, but my grandmother and my mother were very well-mannered,” Maria continued about her mother, Eunice. “So, you know, when someone who was older walked into the room – aka my mother – everyone stood up.
When Maria became a mother, she decided to pass it on.
“I wanted my kids, you know, when I walked into the room — or their father walked into the room, or you would walk into the room — to stand up out of respect,” she told Kotba. “I didn’t want to walk into the room and they’d be sitting there looking at their phone or watching the game.
Maria admitted that her children “groaned and moaned” about it at first, but have since changed their tune.
“I would say, ‘I’m here. Here we are and here I am. And look me in the eye, say hello, say thank you for coming, write me a thank you note if I take you somewhere.” Things like that,” she explained. “Now they say it was a good thing.
Maria with her son Patrick, recently spoke with My Weekly exclusively and emphasized the importance of family in their lives.
“Family is still very important as we get older,” Patrick told us in September 2024. “It’s nice to bring in new people, whether it’s my fiancee, (Abby Champion)or Katherine with her husband, (Chris Pratt)or so on and so forth. There are always more guests coming to dinner.”
Patrick explained that these dinners are an “open invitation” for anyone to come.
“It’s just a nice way to bring everyone together.” The world moves so fast all the time,” he added. “Everyone is so busy with kids, work and travel that it’s a nice moment during the week to settle down and be all together.”
Of course, this was a tradition Patrick learned from his mom.
“There’s a lot of research on families that eat together from a very young age, they do much better in terms of saying no to drugs, no to alcohol, yes to being connected,” Maria said. Our. “If you’re too busy during the week, at least you can count on that.”
