Right now, Robert Eggers Nosferatu the remake is proving to be a bloody hit at the box office and this has started endless debates among horror nerds about whether or not it’s better than the landmark original film. However, true film buffs know that best version is the original remake, a modern horror classic that you can now stream for free. Werner Herzog from 1979 Vampire Nosferatu is available to stream for free, and watching it will transform you as surely as if you’d been bitten by the titular leech itself.

If you are already a Nosferatu hell, you won’t be surprised by the plot of Herzog’s remake when you stream it: we follow the adventures of Jonathan Harker, a young real estate agent in the 19th century who must travel to Transylvania to close a deal. The Transylvanian Boogyman Count Dracula he wants to buy a house in Harker’s neck of the woods and get the young man to leave his beautiful wife at home. By the time the credits roll, he may unexpectedly prove to be the last defense against this creature of the night before he can stretch his body across the rest of Europe.

Nosferatu (1922)

All of this may sound very familiar for a very good reason: the year is 1979 Nosferatulike the original German film, it is based on Bram Stoker Dracula.

The German film was made without permission from his estate, and Stoker’s widow Florence did not feel that the earlier FW Murnau film made sufficient changes to the source material. She filed a lawsuit that resulted in most copies of the original Nosferatu be destroyed

Fortunately, some copies survived, and by the time Herzog decided to make his own remake, the earlier Stoker copyright had expired. This allowed him to name his monster Dracula rather than Nosferatu in the 1979 version.

1979 Nosferatu is now free to stream on Tubi, and unlike some of Tubi’s weirder horror movies, it is has a very solid cast, including Bruno Ganz (probably best known as Hitler in the Oscar-nominated The Fall ) as Jonathan Harker. His wife Lucy is played by French screen queen Isabelle Yasmine Adjani, who previously became the youngest Best Actress nominee for her performance in the film The story of Adele H. But the real star of the show is Klaus Klinski, a bona fide film legend and frequent Herzog collaborator, who makes Count Dracula equal parts terrifying, seductive and even likable.

Klinski certainly managed to seduce critics with his brutal charisma: he Rotten tomatoes, Vampire Nosferatu it has an impressive critical rating of 94 percent. In general, critics praised the film for its beautiful cinematography, as well as Klinsky’s performance, which is intense even by his standards (seriously, he’s a guy who is so unpredictably wild that Werner Herzog seriously threatened kill him on the set of their earlier film Aguirre, Wrath of God). And the audience loved the atmosphere Nosferatu well before Tubi’s release, as evidenced by a healthy 83 percent Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Which Nosferatu is the best? There is one clear choice

As far as I’m concerned, I can’t put it any clearer than to say that with respect to Murnau’s original film, Herzog’s Nosferatu is better in every way. The scenes are more lavish, the plot more complex and the performances more convincing. Horror icon Joe Bob Briggs aired a double feature of the previous film and the first remake on Shudder in 1922, and watching the films back-to-back, I was amazed at how much better the remake was from the first frame to the end credits. (a relative rarity in horror).

When you look Vampire Nosferatu on Tubi, do you think it’s better than the original FW Murnau or even the new Robert Eggers remake? You won’t know until you sink your teeth into this spooky little bite. Luckily, you don’t have to travel all the way to Transylvania to experience this terrifying fiend…all you have to do is start playing and experience the pinnacle of terror from your own not-so-spooky home.
