DETROIT— Ford engineChina’s China operations earned about $600 million last year despite tough market conditions, Chief Executive Jim Farley said late Thursday.

“I’m happy to say Ford makes money in China, and I’m very proud of it, because not many (automakers) can say that,” Farley said after the vehicle’s unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show.

Farley said those profits included the export of vehicles such as the Lincoln Nautilus, which is produced exclusively in China for other markets such as the United States.

China has been an increasingly challenging market for automakers, especially traditional Western companies like Ford and General Motors.

Ford doesn’t report earnings by region, but Farley has previously touted the evolution of the company’s “asset light” strategy in China.
