Blue Origin is highly anticipated The new Glenn rocket is set to make its grand debut. If all goes well with the rocket’s first flight, it could provide some competition for industry favorite SpaceX.
New Glenn is scheduled to lift off during a three-hour launch window beginning at 1 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. The rocket will be launched from Launch Complex 36 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Founded by Jeff Bezos, the world’s second-richest man, Blue Origin first announced the $2.5 billion New Glenn rocket nearly 10 years ago. The 320-foot-tall (98-meter) rocket is designed to lift 45 tons into low-Earth orbit and 13 tons into geostationary orbit.
The new Glenn is partially reusable, the first stage is designed for 25 missions and is powered by seven methane-burning BE-4 engines. The primary goal of New Glenn’s first flight is to reach orbit on the first try. Blue Origin will also try to land its booster in the Atlantic Ocean, but the name of the booster, “So You Tell Me You Have a Chance,” suggests the company is hopeful, but perhaps not fully expecting, that its first attempt will succeed. .
