A baby was born on a crowded migrant boat that traveled from Africa to the Canary Islands this week, the Spanish coast guard says. He has published a photograph of the baby who was rescued along with his mother and many other immigrants.

The Venezuelan opposition said its leader, María Corina Machado, was briefly arrested and later released. It came after she addressed a protest rally in Caracas on the eve of President Nicolás Maduro’s controversial inauguration. The UN expressed alarm after receiving reports of arbitrary arrests and intimidation in Venezuela ahead of opposition marches.
