Shure MV6 Review: A Clean-Looking Gaming Microphone

Getting started is as simple as plug and play, but you’ll need the software to go deep into any settings. I’m not a big fan Reason Mix software recommended on the box. Before I could even download it, Shure asked for my full name, city and state, zip code, and email address for seemingly unnecessary software updates.

The software lets you switch to manual gain, adjust the tone slider from Dark to Bright with Natural in the middle, and turn the denoiser and burst reducer on or off, as well as adjust the high-pass filter for background noise. If you choose to record with Motiv Mix, there are also settings to mute the monitor and sound. Nothing major here, but there doesn’t seem to be any other way to access these settings. I wish the microphone only had buttons.

As far as I can tell, the settings you change will stick even when the app isn’t open, so feel free to adjust it, then close it and go back to whatever you were doing. I did a few benchmark tests with different settings while recording myself, and after listening back, I generally felt that the default settings worked quite well. There is nothing here that I would think of as unusual or silly in any way. The plosive reducer works well enough to not need a pop filter for my Ps. I didn’t notice a particularly strong change with the denoiser turned off, though it probably helped with the rear-rejection of the mic, which helps keep out my keyboard noise.

If I suddenly screamed after whispering, the auto level put me over the top a bit, but it corrected quickly enough and quickly brought me back up when I spoke quietly. It’s nice not to have to worry too much about levels, as there’s no interface for quick checking, and the MV6 doesn’t have any onboard controls or feedback.

People who have listened to posts or chatted with me on Discord have noted that my voice is clear and crisp, a noticeable improvement. my regular gaming headset. I think you could easily use this mic for the occasional broadcast or podcast and have no complaints. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything if I use this instead Audio-Technica AT2035at least when it comes to regular speaking quality. Professional audio engineers may feel differently, but unless you’re checking waveforms or recording audiobooks, you probably won’t.
