Gervonta Davis showed off her dazzling hand speed today, working with her trainer, Barry Hunter, on the gloves, preparing for the title defense of her WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Davis looks great in gloves, but it’s overkill because his opponent, super featherweight Roach, is underpowered and outmatched in this fight. It would be nice if Tank was training like a dog and fighting someone with real talent. So you’re interested in watching him hit the gloves, but not when it’s another special pick like everyone else during Davis’ carefully managed 12-year pro career.
Tank Davis’ last seven opponents
– Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
– Isaac Cruz
–Mario Barrios
– Leo Santa Cruz
That’s a mediocre group, and none of them are relevant fighters at lightweight, none of them. So it’s great that Tank Davis is great at hitting gloves, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing marginal opposition on PPV for $75. Those types of fights should be free because they are fights destined not to match.
Tank’s form closely resembled that of Floyd Mayweather Jr, his former promoter, in his glove workouts. But the two couldn’t be further apart in fighting style. Fortunately, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is much more entertaining to watch than Floyd Jr.
Still, Tank is VERY like Mayweather with his cherry picking plus his glove workouts. Floyd was the best at choosing them and staying away from dangerous predators during his career. Now, Tank is following his safety-first plan.
Fans want to see Tank knock out Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting opposition that has a chance of beating him. Davis or his management have always chosen fighters where he was a big favorite.
They want to see him take on someone like Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn Davis, Andy Cruz, Edwin De Los Santos, Vasily Lomachenko and William Zepeda at lightweight.
