Turki Al-Shiekh says the result of the first fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk would have been “different” if the Gypsy King’s father, John Fury, wasn’t in his corner between rounds.
SugarHill and John Fury told Tyson to do things that were ineffective due to his age, slow movements, and colossal size. John’s advice was not the problem. When you have an old, limited fighter, even perfect instructions won’t help.
Fury looked like a dinosaur outmaneuvered by the faster and more agile Usyk. The instructions from SugaHill and John in his corner were completely useless to him.

John Fury was just there, giving simple instructions and not saying much. He sounded sensible in the corner.
If anything, John was the only positive voice in Fury’s corner that night because SugarHill Steward didn’t seem to be much help. He looked like someone who panicked when things got bad for Tyson.
Tyson’s real problem was Usyk’s talent. He wasn’t good enough to land his punches and seemed mentally weak once the talented Ukrainian hurt him in the ninth round.
Looking back on the fight, it didn’t seem like Tyson was paying attention to his father, John Fury, between rounds. He always looked and listened to his coach, SugarHill Steward, for directions.
Fury’s real problem was his inability to handle Usyk’s body shots, which made him fight against the ropes. Tyson’s mobility was not there for this fight. It seemed as if age had caught up with him, preventing him from fighting in the center of the ring.
Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) lost the first fight via 12-round split decision to Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) on May 18, 2024.
