Noah Wyle he doesn’t regret playing the new doctor Pitt instead of reprising his role as John Carter in the now scrapped film IS revival.
After Pitt premiered Thursday, Jan. 9, Wyle, 53, was asked how he plans to bring back IS eventually turned into a brand new show instead.
“That challenges all the different chronologies of this and all the different kinds of iterations. You’re absolutely right, the intent was born in 2020 during the pandemic,” Wyle said TVLine on Thursday. “The goal was to look at what was happening to the people who were on the front lines, and also to look at the population that was getting sick and dying, and to see how there seemed to be two different health care systems in the country. our country – for people who have money and insurance and for those who don’t.”
Similarities between Pitt and IS they were there for a reason.
“These were all issues we were trying to talk about in the 1990s, when 22 million Americans were living without health insurance and using emergency rooms as their primary source of health care. All of these themes were really important to us then and they remain important to us,” noted Wyle, who portrayed John Carter on the long-running series. “Then it just became, ‘Is the old IP (intellectual property) the easiest and most advantageous delivery system?’ It seemed to be the one that got people most excited to try it, but that wasn’t really the point of the exercise.”
Despite the fact that it exists interest in IS Wyle was invigorated and more excited about the new take on the subject, adding, “The more we went down this road, the more the point became obscured in terms of the reunion aspect, the retread aspect, and the reboot aspect. So I wasn’t sorry when we were kind of forced to turn around and figure out how to tell the story in a new way.”
Wyle continued, “In many ways (not a revival IS) freed us from the narrative constraints we would have to adhere to and pay homage to.”
ISwhich aired from 1994 to 2009, followed the inner life of the ER at a fictionalized version of the real-life Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Wyle played next door George Clooney, Julianna Marguiles, Anthony Edwards, Eriq La Salle and Sherry Stringfield (and later John Stamos, Mekhi Pfifer and Linda Cardelliniamong others).
More than a decade later IS done wyle came back as a star and executive producer of the new medical series about Max. The streaming service describes Pitt as “a realistic exploration of the challenges facing healthcare workers in America today, seen through the lens of frontline heroes working in a modern Pittsburgh hospital.”
Pitt highlights the highs – and lows – of the job, with 15 episodes representing 15 hours of one shift.
“(Fellow EP) John (Wells)Max and Warner Brothers were on board to try to use this new streaming platform to see if we could tell the story in a more visually engaging way than we did in the 90s,” Wyle explained. “It’s a more photorealistic way than we’ve ever been able to do, and a more organic, performance-based way. Because you are no longer bound by standards and practices and language (barriers), you can truly paint with all the colors on the palette. The question is not ‘What can you show?’ Instead, it’s, ‘What should you show with poise and taste?'”
Wyle found it “really gratifying” to bring new medical drama to life.
“I wanted it to look like it used to – and like it hadn’t been for a long time. Could we ever feel that way again? John and (creator) R. Scott (Gemmill) were on board because they were also looking for that feeling that we all (last) had 15 years ago when we first did it,” he continued. “The work felt good, we had a good time, we liked each other and everyone was respectful. It was inclusive and it was groundbreaking. And we wanted to see if lightning can strike twice – and in some ways it already has.”
In addition PittThursday also marked the premiere of Wyle’s La Salle Train Stars Prime Video series On call. Wyle was asked about the coincidence TVLineto which he replied, “No (I did not know), but what can I say? The 90s are back.”
New episodes Pitt stream on Thursday at max.
