A survivor of the devastating Fire Eaton that devastated the Altadena area of Los Angeles County He recently spoke about his experience fighting hell.
Altadena resident Justin Christie spoke with Fox News Digital on Saturday afternoon about his experience. As of Saturday night, the Eaton Fire, which started Tuesday, was only 15% contained.
Christie explained that his family has lived in the area since 1967 and had never before seen anything as destructive as the Eaton Fire.
“(I’ve seen) tons of fires on this hillside,” Christie recalled. “When I saw this, when I went outside and saw the flames on the hillside, something told me this was different.”
“I got really scared and started thinking about what I had to do to prepare.”
Christie said he was especially alarmed after seeing one of his palm trees catch on fire, something that had never happened before. He quickly packed all his family members into his car and drove them away from the scene.
“Never, in all the fires, has one of our trees caught fire,” he said. “And that was the one that really said, okay…we’re in big trouble.”
Later, Christie stopped by to check on the condition of her house; When he realized that no one was going to put out the fire in his palm tree, Christie decided to take matters into his own hands and fight the fire himself.
“I thought that my house, many times, was going to collapse,” he recalled. “From 8 pm to 12 noon. This house that burned next to me was the last one that put me in danger.”
“When it finally calmed down… I had a small sense of relief.”

But Christie said that sense of relief was short-lived before another neighbor suffered a fire in their garage. Although Christie’s home emerged unscathed from the fire, the resident described the entire situation as “simply shocking.”
“It’s heartbreaking. It’s enough to make you want to cry,” Christie said. “A lot of people just lost everything.”
“And I never, ever thought… we’ve been here for so long… I always thought we were far enough away from the fire’s reach.”
Recalling the experience, Christie described the sounds and sights of forest fires as “incredible.”
“The broken glass, the gas lines exploding, people’s propane tanks, the cars on fire,” he described vividly. “It sounded like several freight trains were coming toward you.”
Overall, Christie said her home’s survival after the Eaton Fire was nothing short of a miracle.

“It was a miracle that I was able to control the fire… the wind died down at the right time,” he said. “And if not… it would have gotten caught on this trellis next to me, set fire to my house and it would have been over. And there were several times when I wanted to leave, but I didn’t. No. I stayed.
“If I had left, the house would have been gone. Totally destroyed.”
