The first season On call had Our on the edge of our seats – but where did Wolf Entertainment’s police procedural go from there?
On callwhich premiered Thursday, January 9, centered around veteran training officer Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario) and her newcomer Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente) as they responded to emergency calls on the streets of Long Beach, California. Their partnership came on the heels of a major loss for Harmon and it took her all season and Diaz to start trusting each other.
The Prime Video series found a way to click restart on the dynamic when Harmon ultimately did not recommend that Diaz proceed. Instead, she got him to restart rookie training—with her. Viewers also learned more about Sergeant Lasman (Eric LaSalle) and Lieutenant Bishop (Lori Loughlin) after the initial inquiry whether they were friends or foes.
“We want so many different kinds of people to come to this show – who have so many different views about the police. And we want them to take away what they take away,” Bellisario exclusively said My Weekly. (“executive producer) Elliot (wolf) put it really well He says, ‘We want to create a buffet and we want everyone to come to the table and eat together.’ That’s the thing. We’re not going to say, ‘Oh, you have the idea, so you’re not welcome here.’ You have that idea, so you’re not going to like this show.” You’re going to see people make incredible decisions (on screen). You will see that we make mistakes. Nobody is a hero. And these are human beings – they just happen to do this work.”
Larracuente meanwhile he was just as interested about the future of the show, what the fans will be like.
“At least in my own experience, the show left me with more questions than actual answers. I hope the audience will experience it as well,” he noted. “At the end of the day, we’re not really trying to paint a story. … Hopefully viewers can relate to one of the characters (on the show) in some way, shape or form.
Cast and Creator Tim Walsh answered some burning questions about Season 1 — and where the story will go:
During the Season 1 finale, Harmon recommended that Diaz be paroled, reuniting them as partners. The decision shook their momentum— but it’s a step in the right direction in the long term.
“Harmon made that decision because she doesn’t want to lose him in the first place. He’s starting to feel – there’s nothing romantic between them – but he’s like a bear and this is her cub. So, over the course of the first season, they just grew closer,” Walsh explained Our. “She did it because she believes in her heart that Diaz is not ready to move on because he has a hero complex. She doesn’t want to see him hurt like Officer Delgado. Her feelings are sincere, but at the same time she feels like a mother who does not want to be separated from her child yet.’
Larracuente had a similar thought trial about how Harmon decided to “protect” Diaz.
“She cares about him, and that’s what sets her apart from anyone else he would be paired with.” The fact that after losing someone in the very first episode, she decided to work with Diaz, who is a newcomer, is a testament to her character,” he noted. “Before Diaz gets back into that vehicle at the very end of the episode, I think he has a real question.
Larracuente continued, “The question that goes through his mind is, ‘Can I trust this person?’ She finally realizes, “Holy s-, she’s been taking care of me all this time.” Everything she did was just to protect me, and now I see it.’
Meanwhile, for Bellisario, tipping point showing how much Harmon still had to learn.
“Any good teacher knows when they haven’t done their job — and that’s not really Diaz’s failure.” He takes it as his own failure. But in reality, Harmon sees this as a shortcoming on her part. She didn’t do enough or build it and she has more work to do,” she said Our. “She obviously trusts him. She cares deeply and wants to see him in his career.”
There were no indications that Harmon and Diaz could have been a couple in the future — but what’s the plan behind the scenes?
“The romantic stuff complicates it and allows maybe a little more predictability. Whereas here we don’t have to fall into any of those traps or tropes,” Walsh teased Our. “It can literally be two co-workers. They are two co-workers who are bound by the idea that they have to look out for each other and survive this next shift. I think adding romance would just make it more complicated. The second way allows us to be freer and deepen these two characters.”
Notable Guest Stars in Season 1 included in the price The fire in Chicago‘with Monica Raymond, Ryan Dorsey and Bart Johnson. named Walsh Kurt Russell as his dream cameo in the future, quipping, “If I could get Kurt Russell in it, I could die very, very happy.”
Despite On call largely focused on Diaz and Harmon, there’s room for expansion — starting with LaSalle and Loughlin’s characters.
“They’re definitely a big part of it,” Walsh confirmed. “The shortage is 100 percent.” We’ve (already) cooked up season 2 and ideas about what it’s going to be (while we wait for the official renewal).”
Meanwhile, Loughlin and La Salle, expressed their enthusiasm on Our.
“We definitely have some runway to see more of the two of us. The interesting thing is that we all fit together. How did all those characters come together?” she noted. “There’s a lot of focus on Harmon and Diaz on screen, but I think our approach is, what’s the big picture of all of us as characters? … There’s so much to explore. But we’re in good hands with good writers, so I hope we move forward.”
La Salle praised On call for not making Lasman and Bishop “one dimensional”, adding, “By the time you get to the end of this season, there’s a certain dynamic that’s really changed. That’s a great way to create great storytelling — if we’re lucky enough to get more seasons.”
He continued, “Lori and I were just talking, and as actors we’re interested in seeing if there’s more interaction between the two of us. We’re in sync on a lot of things, but we also want to see what we’re not in sync with? How do they really feel about each other?”
Before co-creation On call with Elliot WolffWalsh worked on Chicago P.D but that does not mean universes will intersect.
“I don’t want to do a crossover with any of the existing shows. I believe we are in our own universe and they are in their own universe,” he said Our. “However, as we expand our universe to include more rescuers, we’re all very playful. There are paramedics in Long Beach. It’s about how well we can get the message across so that people will follow it.”
