“Our family is so proud,” Spelling, 51, gushed via Instagram Story on Saturday, Jan. 11. “We need a little lightness now. Check out @iamdeanmcdermott’s new film Polar opposites on Hallmark tonight.”
Polar oppositeswhich premiered on Saturday, leads off the network “Winter Escape” programming slate.. Movie stars Rhiannon the fish as illustrator Emma, who goes into hiding with engineer Andy on a cruise to Antarctica (Markian Tarasiuk) in an attempt to help his ailing father, who was working as a researcher in an arctic country. Emma’s father is played by McDermott (58).
Spelling and McDermott married in 2004 and broke up 19 years later in 2024. Together they have five children. (McDermott is also the father of a son, Jack, from a previous relationship.)
Earlier this week, Spelling and the kids were forced to evacuate their home in Los Angeles amid ongoing wildfires.
“The post I didn’t want to make…days of watching destruction and watching and living in fear,” Spelling wrote via Instagram on Friday, January 10. ) amazing kindness, sad loss, helpful sharing and pleas. I didn’t want to be redundant. But we were evacuated last night.”
She added: “I tried my best to hang in there and not just run and run, but in the end we had to. My hearts go out to everyone who has lost and suffered so much. But as a mama bear (with) 5 kids and fur babies, your gut will tell you when it’s time to act.”
Spelling herded her children—and their menagerie of pets—to safety.
“Friends who care have been telling me for days to pack and have a plan. I should have listened,” she wrote on Friday. “I could barely fit them all in there. No clothes. But he grabbed the photo albums. And he ran away. … @airbnb saved us! Literally! They went in and found something that would accommodate our huge family and pets, and that same night.’
Spelling went on to conclude that her family is “fine”.
“We are some of the lucky ones,” she added. “It looked and felt like a movie I’d seen too many times. … We are safe. You were awakened by a koi pond and a monarch butterfly sanctuary. Thanks, Dad!”
