Chinese government officials are reportedly discussing the scenario of ByteDance selling TikTok’s US arm to Elon Musk. On January 19, the Supreme Court approved the banning law.
Bloomberg reports China would strongly prefer TikTok to remain owned by ByteDance, but said government officials are considering a sale to Musk as part of a broader plan to work with the administration of incoming President Donald Trump. In this scenario, Musk’s X would acquire TikTok US, effectively absorbing the vertical video platform’s 170 million American users and billions in potential ad revenue.
In a statement, a TikTok spokesperson called the report “pure fabrication.” Diversity.
The report says it’s unclear how much ByteDance and TikTok knew about China’s discussions about the Musk sale, highlighting China’s alleged influence over the platform that brought the law in the first place.
