You are the Ghost in Steven Soderbergh’s The New Haunted House

last year, In Violent Nature elevated the slasher genre by telling the classic “high body count in the desert” tale from the lumbering killer’s perspective. this year, Availability offers a different perspective on a horror film by telling the story of a haunted house from the perspective of a ghost. This is from the A-list team Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Kopp does Availability more interesting.

The voyeuristic, creeping camera work is obviously a key component Availabilityas the main character—the film’s full description is simply “a family moves into a suburban house and makes sure they’re not alone”—lures and revolves around a family that’s moved to their home turf. This trailer highlights the scary elements of the film and tells us that the ghost is “suffering”, which is never a good quality when the curtain is being pierced.

Unlike other stories of ghost heroes trying to grapple with the living people who suddenly live in their midst – think Others or Beetlejuice—Availability it leans towards a disturbingly creepy POV, and from the trailer at least we don’t know what form the ghost takes or if it even shows up.

It would be an interesting project no matter what, but it’s coming from (Oscar winner for directing) Soderbergh.
