Sometimes, you don’t want a phone for frills. You want to call and continue on a tiring day. Enter Motorola’s Moto G line of budget devices, one of the major contributors to the company’s bottom line. High quality cheap phones are what everyone wants. The Moto G and Moto G Power refreshed with new processors and vibrant colors, and the Moto G Power also advertises exceptional water resistance starting at $300.
The Moto G Power is the more attractive of the two budget phones, so we’ll start there. The Moto G Power has an IP69 rating – the same as the newly launched flagship phone OnePlus 13it did a great job of being able to withstand a bath in the dishwasher. Like OnePlus’ $900 phone, the Moto G Power can handle deeper submersion, high-pressure water jets, and hotter water temperatures than most IP68-rated phones. It’s also fully dust-proof around the edges, which is nice considering Motorola kept the headphone jack on it.
This makes the Moto G Power one of the toughest smartphones you can get at this price point. It’s not particularly thick, although you do have to contend with the large 6.8-inch LCD, which might make the device a bit bulky for most users. At least the size means there’s plenty of battery inside. The 5,000 mAh battery should last quite a long time in the Moto G Power as it is also not a power hog. When the phone is ready to charge, you can do so with a 30-watt power brick or a 15-watt wireless charger.
The specs for the Moto G Power won’t beat the latest Pixel A series, but you’ll still get great battery life out of this thing. It houses a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor, clocked slightly higher than last season’s Moto G Power, and paired with 8GB of RAM. The phone has up to 128GB of storage and is accompanied by a microSD expansion slot – another rare feature available in Android land.
For smaller users – though not many – the Moto G is a 6.7-inch device with the same chipset, but a paltry 4GB of RAM. It’s one of the cheapest Motorola phones you can buy, and it covers all the basics. On the plus side, it’s powered by the same 5,000mAh battery pack, making it a long-lasting phone for $200. But don’t throw it in the water; The Moto G only has a “waterproof” design with an IP52 rating.
Both phones will be available for purchase at the end of the month.
