Active Do not quitthere are those who know and those who do not. Those with answers and those with questions. Main Characters like Mark S.Helly R., Irving and Dylan know nothing. They have questions. behind the scenes showman Dan Erickson is one of the guys with the answers. And there are characters like Mister Milchick, played by Tramell Tillman, and Harmony Cobel, played by Patricia Arquette, who know what’s going on in the world of the show.
io9 sat down with two of Lumon’s finest to try to get some of those answers, while also discussing their excitement for season two. Read our full interview below.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Germain Lussier, io9: Both of your characters are more knowledgeable than anyone else on the show. Does it go off screen too? Does Dan share more happenings or little secrets with you?
Patricia Arquette: I don’t know that they give us more information than anybody else, but we’re kind of indoctrinated with power dynamics and structure and all that. So I think we’re very used to pretending that everything is okay, or pretending things are a certain way, pretending there’s some kind of certainty. And keeping a secret is an important part of it.
Tramell Tillman: I think this is a great example of the character knowing more than the actor. This is wild.
io9: The wait has been pretty wild too. It’s interesting, in your daily life, in the last few years, people have approached you and said, “When Do not quit is he coming back?” Do you have any funny stories?
Arquette: I just saw an increase in hostility.
io9: (Laughs) Yeah.
Arquette: “When will he be back?” there is something like They didn’t even want to say “hello” or anything. “Is he coming back? What’s going on?’ Believe me, it is not in my hands. There is nothing you can do about it. But it kept coming back and then at a certain point we were told the date, but then we weren’t allowed to tell the date. So they ask “when will he come back?” “I can’t say anything,” I say.
io9: Right. Well, we finally got it. Now, at the beginning of the second season, each of your heroes has a new starting place here, right? Can you each tell me a little bit about your characters’ journeys this season, in a broad sense?
Tillman: Well, the stakes are up for Milchick. We pick up where we left off at the end of season one and he’s responsible for cleaning up the mess he made with the OTC (Overtime Contingency Protocol) and what happened in the castle and then moving the ship forward. with higher winds, if you will.
io9: And for Harmony?
Arquette: Harmony really lost her strength in this dynamic that she grew up with and was so proud of at the beginning of the season, rising to a position of power. And also, he’s been able to use that position of power to have a bit of a villain that he’s been working on, which he thinks fits Kier’s original concept, messes with the future, and is more distinct from this new Lumon guard – more so Jame. and Helena doesn’t quite agree with Lumon’s concept of a kind. So he’s like a Lumon purist, a Kier purist. But still, he was sent into exile, and so he experiences a cyclone of feelings about this organization, revenge, longing, wanting to hug and return home, and hating it all. So he goes through this journey this season where we see his origin story.
io9: Oh, great. I am very excited to see this. Now, with streaming these days, there are so many shows out there that we’re lucky to have something like this Do not quitit is very good and remarkable, it comes together. You know when you look back at the first season and you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m on a hit show and we could have had a little bit?’
Tillman: For me, it was acceptance. Just the fan art, the amount of artistry born out of this show, how people were inspired and it took a lot of time to make gingerbread houses or costumes in the shape of Kier’s house. Celebrities, other celebrities watching the show and commenting, it was really like, “Oh, it’s getting attention all over the world.”
Arquette: I mean, it’s a great feeling when something is successful and you know you’re not done telling this story, you’re working with your friends and you’re doing it. And then you have all these smart fans who ask funny questions and are funny themselves, and they bring other things to the table, and suddenly you feel like you’re all playing together. I mean, I’ve been in things before, e.g True Romance it was a big bomb. But I knew it was good when I saw it Do not quit we got together and when we did it, when I saw it cut together, whether it was successful or not, I knew it was really interesting and good. So it’s nothing but luck that other people think it’s good and we were able to do a second season.
That second season begins on January 17 on Apple TV+.
