There is perhaps no more common trope for sci-fi fans than time travel. From Star Trek to Back to the futurewe’re used to seeing our favorite heroes and villains travel through time to either save or threaten everything that has ever been or will be. Naturally, this has led to fan debates about which film made the best use of this trope, but those arguments are unnecessary because the answer has been staring us in the face for over 30 years. Simply put, Timecop is the best time travel movie ever made, and you can now stream it for free on Tubi.

Timecop rules

Timecop (which is adapted from the Dark Horse Comics story of the same name by Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden) focuses on a government agency tasked with preventing crimes involving time travel. One-time cop, agent Max Walker is caught up in a tangled time story involving a senator who abuses time travel to fund his presidential ambitions. After this Senator takes out Biff Tannen and successfully turns the future in his favor, it will take all of Walker’s skills and knowledge to save more than just the world…he must save history itself.

Great performances are the cornerstone Timecop…Ron Silver (best known for his Emmy-nominated role in West wing) plays a dirty senator to manipulate the timeline. Meanwhile, Mia Sara (best known for playing the love interest of the main character in the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) plays Max Walker’s wife. Finally, Walker is played by the movie’s martial arts maestro Jean-Claude Van Dammewhose unique brand of action schlock chutzpah transforms Timecop into something almost transcendentally strange.

Fortunately, the general audience did not find it Timecop too weird after the premiere. The film grossed $101.6 million on a $27 million budget. While not exactly a huge success, the film grossed enough to spawn a short-lived ABC television adaptation in 1997. We finally got a direct-to-video sequel in 2003, though neither the sequel nor the TV series brought Van Damme back. .

original Timecop it may have impressed the box office, but it didn’t quite impress the critics. On Rotten tomatoesthis film has a 42 percent critical rating. In general, critics acknowledged the film’s appeal science fiction fans who were able to suspend their disbelief and not question time travel too much. However, critics mostly agreed that the film fell far short of the time travel classics of the likes of James Cameron Terminator.

So, the moment of truth: why the hell do I recommend you watch it Timecopa critically panned sci-fi film whose pop culture footprint can be measured in lousy sequels? First, despite the conceit of critics who have historically scorned science fiction, the plot of this time travel movie is clever and compelling. His vision of how humans would inevitably abuse time mechanics for wealth and power is both understandable and creative, and the film as a whole actually it lives up to its entire silly premise.

Mostly, though, this movie is worth watching for Jean-Claude Van Damme, who previously starred in classic action movies like Blood sport, Kickboxerand Universal soldier. He’s not the most emotive or expressive actor, but he makes up for it with a raw physicality that transforms what could be de rigueur cinematic combat into magnificent displays of true martial prowess. Van Damme has always been a special effect in his own right thanks to his martial arts skills, and in the high-tech world of Timecop, his brand of killer kung fu stands out that much more thanks to its beautifully precise yet technically low-key execution.

You will like it Timecop like me, or will you want to travel back in time and warn your slightly younger self to never watch it? You won’t know until you experience the intersection of action sci-fi and ambitious sci-fi for yourself. And if you end up traveling back in time, remember that touching your past self will kill you both, so be very be careful when throwing away the remote control.
