Cinema has lost something great today. As the news comes in David Lynch’s transition seems more unreal than anything the director has yet done, we mourn the loss along with other directors and actors privileged to exist in Lynchian times. And we pour a cup damn good coffee for him.
Steven Spielberg, a modern-day film titan and colleague, shared a comment Diversity about the great loss of his peer: “I loved David’s films. Blue Velvet, Mulholland Driveand The Elephant Man established him as a solitary, visionary dreamer directing films that felt handmade,” Spielberg recalled. “I got to know David when he played John Ford Fablemen. Here’s one of my heroes – David Lynch was playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and looked like a scene from one of David’s own movies. The world will miss such an original and unique voice. His films have stood the test of time and always will.”
Longtime friend and collaborator Kyle MacLachlan paid tribute to Lynch Instagram: “Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my understanding, David Lynch plucked me from obscurity to star in his first and last big-budget film. He clearly saw something in me that I never knew. I truly owe my entire career and life to his vision.
What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man, with a creative ocean bubbling inside him. He was in touch with something that we others could not get.
Our friendship blossomed Blue velvet and then Twin Peaks and I always found him to be the truest living man I ever met.
David was attuned to the universe and his imagination at a level that seemed like the best version of man. He wasn’t interested in the answers because he understood that questions are the drivers that make us who we are. They are our breath.
While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I have lost a dear friend who envisioned a future for me and allowed me to travel to worlds I could never have imagined on my own.
Now I can hear him standing up to meet me in his yard, with a warm smile and a big hug, and the sound of the Great Plains. We would talk and laugh about coffee, the joy of the unexpected, the beauty of the world.
Her love for me, and mine for her, stems from the cosmic destiny of two people who see the best things about themselves in each other.
I will miss him more than my tongue and my heart can bear. My world is fuller because I knew him and emptier after he left.
David, I am forever changed and forever your Kale. Thank you for everything.”
The actor shared with Nicolas Cage Deadline: “He was a maverick with a bold, brilliant and hilarious sense of humor,” Cage continued, “I’ve never had more fun making a movie than working with David Lynch. He’ll always be solid gold.”

Like Kafka, like Bacon, he devoted his life to opening a portal. He was the first person to show me another world, a beautiful one full of love and danger, a world I sensed but never saw outside of my dreams. Thank you David, your gift will resonate with me for the rest of my life. https://t.co/pK2GDycV1Y

David Lynch said that making movies should be fun and joyful. Of course, it can be hard work. Of course, the work itself can involve all kinds of pain and painful truth. But the very act of creation should be full of joy. I think about it all the time.
RIP David Lynch. You are immortal.
