LeBron James gave one young Lakers fan a memory she’ll remember for a lifetime.
During the first quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Miami Heat on Wednesday, Jan. 15, James, 40, acknowledged a girl sitting courtside in one of his No. 23 jerseys. The girl was overcome with emotion after James spotted her — which the NBA icon learned after she checked his phone during the game.
“A family friend sent me a clip at halftime,” James he told reporters after the game. “Thank God I actually looked at my phone at half-time or I wouldn’t have seen the reaction when I waved at her in the first half. I waved her off and went back to playing.”
After the game, James made his way to the fan and took a picture with her with his arm wrapped around her shoulder.
“To have that type of connection with somebody where they can have that type of reaction, that’s what it’s all about,” James continued. “I’ve always tried to be a role model and someone that kids can look up to. Men, women, whatever. Try to make them proud when they come to see me play, or if they can’t see me play, hopefully some of the things I do off the floor will continue to inspire them.”
James added: “It was a super dope moment.” I have a little girl at home myself.’
Lakers star shares daughter Zhuri10, with his wife, Savannah James. The couple also have sons together Bronny20 a Bryce17.
It’s been a tough few weeks for James, the Lakers and the city of Los Angeles following forest fires which ravaged large parts of Southern California.
“I have some dear friends who lost their homes in (Pacific) Palisades,” James said after Wednesday’s game. “Obviously, my heart goes out to all the families not just in the Palisades, but throughout LA County and all the surrounding areas because of the fire.”
James added: “It was a lot of emotion.” Somehow off. I was gone personally. I’ve just been completely out for obvious reasons, but hopefully things are or will continue to be limited. And hopefully at some point we can start to push forward and move forward and put this behind us and rebuild our city, rebuild this beautiful city.”
lakers head coach JJ Redickhe was one of those directly affected and lost his family’s home in the Palisades neighborhood.
“I’ve been through most of the village and everything is gone and I don’t think you can prepare for something like that,” Redick, 40, told reporters Friday, Jan. 10. “Our home is gone.
Redick continued, “We’ve been renting for a year to try to figure out where we want to be long term. Everything we owned and that was important to us, almost 20 years together as a couple and 10 years of parenting, was in that house. There are certain things that you can’t replace, that you’ll never replace.”
The rookie coach shared a home with his wife, Chelsea Redickand their two sons: Knox10 a Kai8.
