“I don’t want people to look at me and Barack as a hashtag couple of goals and not know that no, no, even in the best marriage, some dysfunctional things happen,” Michelle said during an episode of the show. “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast. in January 2024. “After 31 years, yes, we’re still doing it (over the line), but you know it faster. And then you apologize. You’ll learn to say my bad, won’t you? That takes a second, doesn’t it?”
She added: “I talk about marriage because I just think the No. 1 thing most people don’t talk about. What happens is that by not knowing it, you hit some natural, sort of understandable rough patches in your relationship and you want to end it. And it’s like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, no, no. It’s not worth it. That’s just the nature of things.’ So I joked, it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re mad at your partner, you’re mad for a year and you think the marriage is over.'”
For Michelle, she and Barack were able to “learn” from their hardships instead of giving up.
“Obviously it’s going to be hard, you know, but I wouldn’t trade my marriage for anything in the world with all the ups and downs, with all the women running for president,” Michelle added at the time. “And if we didn’t hang in there, we’d miss out on everything good.
The Obamas are now empty nesters as both Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23, have each graduated from college and she moved out of the family home. The sisters are still roommates and often invite their parents over for drinks.
“We wanted to take them out for dinner and they said, ‘Why don’t you come over for cocktails?'” Michelle recalled. Today show in 2022. “We were like, ‘OK, we’ll see how it goes.’ Well, (for one thing), the martinis were a little weak. I don’t think they really knew what it was.”
