Katie Drummond, WIRED’s global editorial director, started our discussion this time, telling how her father was recently approached by a scammer who tried to trick him with a voice that sounded like him. You may want to protect yourself and your loved ones set a secret password you can use it to confirm each other during emergency calls.
We’re also joined by Andrew Coates, WIRED’s senior security and investigations editor. Couts shared his views on the different approaches used by fraudsters, including how different groups are using artificial intelligence tools to deeply fake live videos and trick people. He reminded viewers to watch out for social engineering techniques often used by scammers, such as creating a sense of urgency or encouraging them not to tell anyone. you can learn more about AI scam calls here.
During the live event, I talked about my latest research AI financial advisors and it reminded me to be skeptical of startups that claim to help with money matters. Instead of using my bank information to help me financially, AI advisors focused on getting me high-fee cash advances or high-interest personal loans.
