NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden has urged disillusioned fellow Democrats not to give up hope as he returns to the home of a church-going public. Black Carolina marks the last day of his presidency on Sunday.
Biden leaves office on Monday, ending a four-year term that has left his Democratic Party in the political wilderness as he hands the office back to Republican challenger Donald Trump, whom Democrats see as a threat to democracy.
At the Royal Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston, Biden was fondly remembered by political allies and received tributes from churchgoers.
“We often think about resurrection and redemption, but remember, Jesus was buried on Friday, and rose on Sunday,” Biden told churchgoers from the pulpit. “We don’t say enough about Saturday, when his disciples felt that all hope was lost.”
His comments came amid major developments during the waning presidency of Biden, including a long-sought ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which has been and in the last 15 months of the Biden presidency.
“I will say to you, great friend, a little appreciation has been shown recently, but don’t get discouraged, history will be very kind to you,” said representative Jim Clyburn, who spoke in front of Biden, a remember the bad standards of Abraham. Lincoln, Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson.
Biden spoke of deep political disillusionment after withdrawing last summer from the race for a second term amid concerns about his age and campaign performance, but hint that he intends to stay in the public eye after his term is over.
“I’m not tired at all,” Biden said, repeating the gospel standard to applause. “I’m not going anywhere.”
South Carolina Democrats saved Biden’s political career in January 2020, giving him his first presidential victory and the power he will hold on to his victory over Trump later that year.
Biden credited Clyburn’s recent endorsement in the race with giving voters to the district and said there is no better place to spend his last day in office.
There, at the predominantly black church, Biden marked the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. a day earlier, along with his wife, Jill, and son, Hunter, and other family members and close aides.
He made an offering before entering, according to the pastor, and later visited the International African American Museum in Charleston.
Parishioners swayed and an electric bus rang during the service.
“Every time I spend time in a black church,” Biden said, “I think about one thing: the word ‘hope.’
