Donald Trump is very popular with the size of the crowd, but any attempt to cap the number of people who attended the party will be complicated by the party being moved inside the Capitol building because of the cold weather.
About 250,000 ticketed spectators were expected to descend on downtown Washington for the event, but the venue was closed. The inauguration also draws hundreds of thousands of people who don’t have tickets to the National Mall, but those coming this year will be put at risk by the weather.
The presidential parade, which usually travels down Pennsylvania Ave from the Capitol to the White House, has been moved to the 20,000-seat Capital One Arena.
In 2017, Trump was under fire after photos showed fewer people at the mall to see his first inauguration than Barack Obama’s in 2009.
An estimated 250,000 to 600,000 people attended Trump’s first event, according to PolitiFact. Obama’s inauguration brought an estimated* 1.8mn (2009) and 1mn (2013) people to the National Mall, while George W Bush’s drew 300,000 (2001) and 400,000 (2005).
