Kate Winslet she’s known for her fearless film roles—but she’s not completely fearless.
While appearing on the Friday, January 17, episode Late showWinslet, 49, told the host Stephen Colbert about what he refers to as “the scariest animal in the world”.
“Honestly, I’m not great with cows,” she told Colbert, 60, prompting laughter from both the host and his studio audience. “No, no, no listen, here’s the thing. Someone said to me, ‘You’ve got to learn to read a field of cows, you’ve got to, you’ve got to be careful, because when they turn, they’re gone.’
The Lee star went on to recall the advice she received, detailing that if you see “their tails flicking ‘and they’re flicking and there’s flies,” it means they’re unhappy. “They might charge you,” she recalled .
Winslet added that she never realized how dangerous cows could be, telling Colbert that she goes “hiking all the time,” where she often navigates trails “through fields of cows.”
“I decided to knock me down,” Winslet concluded cheerfully with a straight face. The remark led Colbert to ponder, “Has that ever happened?” to which Winslet revealed that cows had indeed haunted her and her mother in the past.
“Bo-Peeping it slowly and then they sped up, really, really,” Winslet said. “I’d say a few gallops to the border. However, there are quite a few stories in England about people having very nasty encounters with cows. Very real. So I am extremely wary of the cow field.’
She added that she wanted to “deal better” with her fears, telling Colbert that “they’re not really scary, are they? No, they’re not,” before reiterating that being wary of cows was a “legitimate fear”.
Colbert’s light-hearted interview question was part of what the TV host calls “The Colbert Questionert,” which includes 15 interview questions to help him get to know his guests. Previous celebrities who have participated in the often hysterical series of interviews include George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks.
As for Winslet, her concern about cows follows the actress’ candid recollection of one of her most famous moments on screen. During the September 26 episode of “Happy Sad Confused” podcast he hosts Josh HorowitzWinslet revealed that she and Titanic costar Leonardo DiCaprio filmed his the notorious door scene in “waist height” water.
“That was a pretty unpleasant tank,” Winslet told Horowitz. “To burst the bubble, it was a waist-high tank. So first of all, I would periodically say to myself, ‘Ugh, I can go pee,’ and then I would get up and climb out the door and walk to the edge of the tank, which was about 20 feet away, and I would literally have to swing my leg and climb out of the tank and go pee and then come back and crawl around the door again.’
She added that DiCaprio, 49, knelt throughout the filming of his (spoiler alert) death scene that has been hotly debated for years.
