A really bad movie is a work of art Schedule 9 From Universe or Manosmovies that are so bad watching it is considered an experience that every cinephile must experience at least once. You can’t fully appreciate great movies without knowing how bad things can get when the director’s vision is bigger than his budget. The greatest modern example of these films is Geostorma nonsensical sci-fi disaster movie starring Gerard Butler that makes no sense when you explain it, much less when you try to watch it, but has become an ironic cult classic.
For starters, Butler plays Jake Lawson, a satellite designer whose name might as well be “Good guy” who’s brought back aboard the project he started three years ago to figure out what’s going on with the weather system. – control of satellites. Satellites are able to freeze a village in the desert and unleash fire tornadoes in Hong Kong in a sequence that sounds like it should look awesome but starts as a screen saver. Even the secrets of what goes on inside Geostorm is barely interesting on a surface level, with Jake immediately suspecting a member of the satellite crew of being a traitor.
He’s right of course and how you look Geostormyou learn that Jake is never wrong until he pinpoints the exact key US official responsible for the whole mess. As proof of how bad the movie is, in the best possible way, even you can crack the plot by looking at the cast list. That, and the solution to the rogue satellite network is to knock satellites out of orbit using other satellites as weapons, and that at least looks as ridiculous as it sounds.
Geostorm is a movie that moves a mile a minute, something is constantly happening, and yet, thanks to some of the worst dialogue of modern times and an incredibly inconsistent pace, it also feels like nothing is happening. When the geostorm finally hits, it’s in bland scenes of mass destruction that have less weight to them than characters orbiting a plant in zero gravity. And yet you have to see this movie to really understand what a spectacular failure the whole project was.
The cast is stacked, from Butler to Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, Andy Garcia, the always underrated Mare Winningham, Zazie Beetz and more. Into the Badlands’ star Daniel Wu. Behind the camera Dean Devlin, the man behind the fun adventure shows Librarians and Influence he’s making his directorial debut and he’s really trying. In fact, you can tell everyone is giving it their all Geostormchewing the scenery and delivering the dumbest straight-faced techno-babble, it’s the passion and visible effort that make this a true B-movie classic.
Geostorm is the most boring science fiction disaster movie ever made, and in a way it’s also the best because it’s so big and brash and tries so hard. There are better movies out there, thousands of them, maybe a million, but very few hit that sweet spot that makes for perfect viewing with friends while you’re all screaming at the screen. You should never watch this movie alone because then the horror will hit you full, but with friends doing your best Mystery Science Theater, it’s the best movie of the last ten years.
best of all Geostorm is now streaming on Tubi, so you don’t even have to pay to watch.
