Naomi Watts shares two children with ex Liev Schreiberbut it was not an easy road for them to become parents.
“I was determined to get pregnant as soon as possible. I wasn’t due to hormone levels candidate for IVF, but I tried fertility drugs like Clomid and procedures like intrauterine insemination (IUI),” Watts, 56, wrote in her new book, I dare say it: Everything I wish I knew about menopausewhich was released on Tuesday, January 21 “I would eat my dog’s toenails if someone told me it would help.”
Watts wrote that she tracked her ovulation “regularly” and had scans for updates on her “follicles and eggs being formed.” She added: “We should have sex at exactly the optimal moment for conception. None of it worked.”
The actress was 36 when she and Schreiber, now 57, started trying for a baby.
“I always dreamed of being a young mother, but I never got around to it,” she wrote. “Up until then I had spent my entire adult life trying to avoid pregnancy, so as soon as I felt ready at the age of 36, I assumed I would get pregnant the first time – maybe the second or third at the most. Months passed. Nothing.”
She miscarried once during the whole process.
While filming Eastern Promisesmovie in which Watts rode a motorcycle, the actress found out she was pregnant. In the 2007 film, she did her own stunts and stayed mum about the life she’s growing inside.
“Also, I didn’t want to tell anyone yet because it was so early, and because I didn’t want to be difficult, I just kept going,” she wrote. “It was another example of how, as women, we often do things that threaten us to be team players.”
Watts and Schreiber welcomed their first child, Sasha, in July 2007. Their second child, Kai, was born in December 2008. (Watts and Schreiber ended their 11-year relationship in 2016. She has since married Billy Crudup. Schreiber with his wife Taylor Neisen welcomed the child in August 2023.)
“I gave birth at 38 and had my second child very soon after when I was 40. I think my body somehow learned the program to make babies,” she wrote. “I always knew I wanted more than one child, although I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. I actually wanted more than two – but alas, time really ran out at that point.’
I dare say it it’s out now.
