“These people have been destroyed, what they have done to these people is abhorrent, something that has rarely happened in the history of this country,” Trump said of the January 6 ceremony from the Oval Office. He also floated conspiracy theories that “outsider agitators” and the FBI were somehow responsible for the January 6 violence. Oand Keepers founder Stuart Rhodes, who was also found guilty of seditious conspiracy, has also received a reduced sentence and will be released.
Trump mocked the pardons coming from his event at Capital One Arena on Monday, promising the release of the “J6 hostages” soon.
“Oh, you’ll be happy reading the paper tomorrow, the day after that, and the day after that,” he said.
Reached by phone on Monday, Duarte told WIRED that they are waiting for Enrique to be released. “The kids are excited and they think justice will finally come to us,” Duarte said. “Donald Trump knows what it is to be on the side of the accused and on the side of the unjust.”
Asked if Tarrio was still involved with the Proud Boys, Duarte replied, “That’s a question you have to ask him when he’s out there.”
Before Trump even put ink to paper, reports began circulating online that correctional facilities had begun processing him for release on January 6. Social media accounts associated with the Proud Boys were jubilant, and in 2016 Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes announced a “Party for the Boys” live on his show as he collected donations to support freed members of the gang.
As an act of the first day, it was strikingly symbolic. Four years ago on January 6, 2021, thousands of Trump supporters, fueled by conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, descended on DC and besieged the Capitol in an attempt to prevent a peaceful transfer of power. The ugly scenes left five people dead, more than 140 police officers injured, and Trump left Washington in disgrace.
A few weeks later, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States in front of riot barriers, barbed wire and more than 25,000 National Guard troops.
