Richard Gere and his wife Alejandra Silvathey open up about their new life in Spain.
“The kids didn’t want me to leave this morning,” Gere, 71, said in an interview Elle Spain next to Silva, 41. “They asked me about their mother and I told them she was in a meeting.”
“And where are you going, Dad?” Gere continued. “Meeting too,” he replied.
According to Elle Spainhis family side surprises the crew. “It’s like landing in a different reality than many imagine,” writes the reporter, changing people’s perception of the actor.
However, it’s a part of Gere that Silva has known about for years.
“Richard is a very devoted and present father. He likes to read them stories. It looks like an idyllic photo, but it is. He’s a great dad,” she said.
“He doesn’t cook,” she added. “I do, but when I cook, he plays the guitar.
Earlier this year, Gere and Silva decided to leave their lives in America and move to Spain, Silva’s native country.
Before their wedding in 2018, after meeting each other in Italy in 2014, Silva moved to America to be with Gero.
In an interview with Jimmy FallonGere said it’s time to return the favor.
“My wife is Spanish and she gave me about seven years here, so we will spend a few years in Madrid with her family. Our children are bilingual, so they will do well there.”
Now in their interview with Elle Spainhe says life in spain is great.
“The truth is, you see us in ours momentum. We are happier than ever,” he said of Spain. “She because she’s home and me because when she’s happy I’m happy.”
In Silva’s words, she and Gere are “like soul mates”.
“We have the same values, we see the world the same, and from the first moment we felt like we had known each other for a long time. And that only happens once, if at all… We were brought together by the karma of our past lives,” she continued.
Silva and Gere share two children together, 5-year-old Alexander and 4-year-old James. Silva has an eleven-year-old son, Alberto, from his first marriage, who also moved to Spain.
Gere also has a 24-year-old son, Homer, from a previous marriage, who has remained in New York working on his own acting career, Elle news.
And while change is hard, Gere said it’s easier to change yourself than trying to change other people.
“We can all minimize this sense of ego, of self.” And that’s when real change happens,” Gere said, expanding on the idea of change. “My wife shines with her openness and genuine sense of gratitude. So connecting with that, however you do it, whether you think of it as spirit or religion, love or compassion… it’s infinite.”
“One of the things that connects us the most and made us fall deeply in love was our activist hearts,” added Silva.
Except it’s on the cover Elle Spainthe couple was also celebrated for their work with The Sierra and Mar Project with the ELLE Eco Award.
The Sierra a Mar Project is “a conservation and sustainable development initiative aimed at protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems in Mexico, especially along the area where the mountains meet the ocean, promoting environmentally responsible practices and economic growth of local communities.
“Being an activist leads you to put your values into the world and make it better,” Silva said.
“It’s about giving a voice to people who don’t have one and raising awareness. It has a very deep meaning and we have to value where we put our energy, but no matter how small, we can always contribute.”
In addition to their environmental work, Silva and Gere are also interested in ending homelessness.
“The only reason Richard and I are both here in Madrid is to be part of the board of an NGO Home Yes ,” she shared. “We want to help this country end homelessness. Our goal is that no one sleeps on the street by the age of 5.”
“The path of empathy transcends religion,” added Silva.
