Stargate SG-1 The series has maintained a loyal following since it aired and it’s always a treat to see the cast reunite in various shows and movies. Such was the case with Amanda Tapping’s SyFy series, Sanctuaryabout “Abnormals,” beings that have been part of human lore, legend, and mythology, but need protection from the world when Michael Shanks, her longtime colleague from SG-1, appeared in Season 2. The two shared the screen again, making sure to include a few nods to their time together, and on the Tapping DVD commentary, he delightfully never stops praising his old friend.
“Penance”, Season 2, Episode 9, is another “Case of the Week” episode. Sanctuarywhere Shanks plays Jimmy, an Abnormal forced into a life of smuggling by dangerous criminals. Jimmy and Helen Magnus, Tapping’s scientist who is older than her, are old friends, but nod to Tapping’s appearance Stargate SG-1Jimmy greets her with “I love that hair” because Amanda Carter was short blonde and Helen has long brunette locks. Both admitted it was a joke they managed to fit into the episode, specifically as a nod to SG-1 fans.
Jimmy, as Abnormal, also has a strange stomach pouch mutation, which makes him a talented smuggler, but also resembles a stomach pouch Stargate SG-1 Jaffa. Although the Jaffa housed a Gou’ald larva in their pouch, Jimmy tends to carry bombs in his. The Sanctuary ends the only way it could because one of the returns in the writer’s room had to read “Helen can never win” when Jimmy sacrificed himself.
Shanks and Carter’s reunion isn’t the only transition between them Stargate SG-1 and Sanctuarywhich also included Christopher Heyerdahl as part of the main cast as Join Druitt and “Big Guy” (never confirmed to be Big Foot, but he is Big Foot). Heyerdahl played Pallan, a man trapped inside the dome before, of course, Samantha Carter severed his connection to the AI that was manipulating him. It’s clear that someone thought the two had great chemistry, because the second time they worked together, playing supernatural Exes provides some of the best parts of the first three seasons.
A subtler but perfectly targeted joke Sanctuary season three directly focused on the biggest difference between Amanda Tapping’s two characters: the accent. In the Season 3 episode “Bank Job”, Helena Magnus has to stage a bank robbery while changing into an American accent, prompting the teller to remark, “I knew the British accent was fake!” The Interpreter is played by Gary Jones, better known as Stargate SG-1 Norman Harriman, neat reference to how British Tapping used an American accent to play Carter.
Like almost every other couple science fiction shows Stargate SG-1 and Sanctuary had a number of recognizable faces crossed over between the two shows, partly for reference, but also because both shows were filmed in Vancouver. This is why many Supernatural performers also appear, and Heyerdahl in particular seems to have been in almost every series ever filmed in Canada. None is as good as getting Dr. Jackson and Dr. Carter back on screen, if only for a few minutes; and if you can, watch the commentary on the Sanctuary DVD, which is not only fascinating because of the unique way the show was made, but also because Amanda Tapping enthusiasm for science fiction is contagious.
Sanctuary is streaming on Pluto.
