Trump says he is considering imposing a 10% tariff on China starting February 1

President Donald Trump said his team was discussing a 10% tariff on China and that the tariff could take effect as early as February 1.

“We’re talking about a 10% tariff on China based on the fact that they’re shipping fentanyl to Mexico and Canada,” the president told reporters at the White House on Tuesday night.

“February 1 is probably the date we’re looking at,” he added.

Trump also noted Tuesday that his team is talking about a tariff of “approximately 25%” on Mexico and China.

The president’s latest comments come a day after he said he was thinking about impose 25% levies on Mexico and China already in February.

“We are thinking in terms of 25% (taxes) on Mexico and Canada, because they are allowing large numbers of people” to cross the border, he said Monday.

While campaigning in 2024, Trump had threatened to impose tariffs. more than 60% about Chinese products. Last November, he asked “an additional 10% tariff” about China, according to a publication on their social media platform Truth Social.
