Anime is more popular than ever, and while the biggest names are currently embracing the classic Shonen tradition such as Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisenand My Hero Academiathat all changes thanks to a scrappy retired hit man. Sakamoto days is another story of a legendary assassin forced back into the criminal underworld, but what brings the anime and manga it’s based on the right accepts the absurdity of the situation. Taro Sakamoto is a dangerous man even after years of retirement, but he won’t break the promise he made to his wife not to kill anyone.
Creator Yuto Suzuki was inspired by the action films of the last decade, incl Equalizer and John Wick when he wrote the story of Tara Sakamata, who decided to hang up his guns on a date with Aoi, an official who made it a condition of their relationship that he would never kill again. IN Sakamoto days first episode, Tara’s peaceful, ideal life of running a convenience store is shattered by ghosts from his past, forcing him to take up arms, but he’s joined by the store’s employees, who happen to include his former assassin protégé Shin. Shin has an uncanny ability to read minds, especially Sakamata’s, which is useful as the ex-hitman doesn’t have much to say and prefers to keep to himself.
In practice, Shin’s mind reading is similar to Anya’s Spy x Familywhen she reads Loid and Yor’s mind to know what they are thinking, but she would never say it out loud. Sakamoto Days gets a lot of mileage out of Taro’s bland outlook, with the other, much more expressive characters reflecting him, especially his family, who are strangely accepting of his past life. The way Aoi, Shin, Hana (Aoi and Tara’s six-year-old daughter) and, in the second episode, Lu, a young woman on the run from hitmen, play off Taro is a perfect mix of characters, and the series has already become a hit.
Sakamoto days published every week day Netflixwith new episodes premiering every Saturday. It’s unwatchable right now, but once you start watching, you’ll want to keep going until you reach the end. Millions of viewers agree that the first episode achieved the impressive feat of debuting as the third most popular show on Netflix for the day, an unheard of achievement for the first episode of an original. anime. It makes sense, considering the manga has sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
My Hero Academia soon to be over Demon Slayer goes to the cinema and Jujutsu Kaisen is gearing up for its final season, which will leave a huge hole in the anime schedule. Sakamoto days is an unlikely successor, but the humour, shootouts and well-executed characters mean it has all the ingredients to be a massive hit. It remains to be seen if the first season can keep up the momentum, but with the second installment adapting an even more action-packed story arc already planned for July, we’ve only just begun to see Sakamoto’s true power.
Sakamoto days is now streaming on Netflix with new episodes every Saturday and a second season coming in July.
