The 97th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Although the date of the ceremony remained the same, the Director General of the Academy Bill Kramer and President of the Academy Janet Yang teased that this year’s show may look different after the wildfires in LA affected thousands across the region, including many celebrities.
“We are devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound loss suffered by so many in our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force in the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of adversity,” Kramer and Yang said in a joint statement on Jan. 13, adding that the Oscar voting period had been extended.
“Furthermore, we want to be sensitive to the infrastructure and accommodation needs of the region in these next few weeks, which is why it is imperative that we make some changes to our schedule of events that we believe will win the support of our industry,” the statement continued. “Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community and we are determined to take this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry. We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who helped with the fires, recognizing those affected and encouraging people to join the Academy and support the relief effort.”

Will the 2025 Oscars be affected by the Los Angeles fires?
It is not known if the wildfires in LA will affect the awards ceremony itself. However, the voting window for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was extended several times due to the fires. Voting closed on January 17, which was the date the nominations were originally supposed to be announced.
The Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon was scheduled to take place on Monday, February 10, but was canceled, while the Science and Technology Awards were postponed from their original date of Tuesday, February 18.

According to The Hollywood ReporterFour members of the Academy’s 55-member board of governors lost their homes to the fires. The organization also reportedly donated $750,000 to the Motion Picture & Television Fund to help those affected by the fires.
How are the Oscars different from other award shows?

Unlike the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards, which recognize both movies and TV, the Oscars recognize only achievements in film.
There will be no musical performances by nominated artists
In January 2025, it was reported that Best Original Song would no longer be awarded during the live broadcast. In addition, the nominees will not perform the singles live on air.
