After the success of films like Oppenheimerit’s fair to say that Christopher Nolan is one of the greatest and most ambitious directors of this generation. His body of work is so vast and spans so many genres that Nolan fans often fiercely debate what his best work is. If you’re a sci-fi fan, there’s no doubt about it Beginning is the director’s masterpiece, and you can now stream its stunning perfection on Netflix.
The Beginning on Netflix
If you are watching Beginning first time on Netflix, you might need some basic plot info: basically, we follow the misadventures of a group whose specialty is infiltrating the dreams of corporate titans and extracting important business secrets from their subconscious. The leader of the group is hired to do something that was largely thought to be impossible: implant an idea into someone’s head instead of simply stealing the information. Despite perfect planning, the operation soon goes awry, leaving our protagonists fighting for their lives in a reality where the rules are constantly changing and a subconscious dreamscape threatens to turn into a deadly nightmare.
Beginning is likely attractive to Netflix viewers because of its amazing cast, starting with Leonardo DiCaprio as a dream thief who is hired to implant an idea into the subconscious of the target he plays. Cillian Murphy. Ken Watanabe plays the businessman who hires him and Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a partner who helps plan a heist. DiCaprio’s team is rounded out by other big names including Elliot Page and Tom Hardy and our main character is haunted in a dreamscape by his ex-wife, played to perfection by Marion Cotillard.
Success in science fiction
With a budget of $160 million, Beginning is better than most science fiction originals on Netflix and you’ll definitely see the money on screen thanks to the larger-than-life imagery and trippy visuals used to bring the subconscious to life. Fortunately for Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros., this big-budget gamble paid off in an equally big way. The film grossed a respectable $839 million at the box office, cementing its place in Hollywood history even as it became the source of endless hilarious memes.
In a different way Beginning It stands out from Netflix’s typical sci-fi offerings by winning many prestigious awards. Notably, the film won four Oscars, including Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography (to this day, it’s probably the prettiest movie you’ll see all year). And while it didn’t take home those particular awards, the film was nominated for other Academy Awards, such as Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, which gives you an idea of how much of an impact this film had on critics and audiences alike.
Speaking of impressing the critics, Beginning stands out from other sci-fi Netflix shows in how much it has won over individual critics. On Rotten tomatoesThe film has a critical score of 87 percent, with critics generally praising how Inception is both a clever logic box of a film and a crowd-pleasing action epic. Meanwhile, viewers gave it a 91 percent on the Pocornmeter website, which surely underlines how well Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece has wowed just about everyone who’s seen it.
You will be similarly impressed Beginning when you stream it on Netflix, or is this sci-fi blockbuster more the stuff of your nightmares than your dreams? You won’t know until you hit play and stream it yourself. And if you end up confusing reality and fiction while watching, just look at Cotillard. The fact that DiCaprio’s big love interest in the film was 35 at the time (a full decade older than DiCaprio’s actual romantic partners) is a sure sign that you’re still (for better or worse) stuck in the real world.
