January 22 prince harry reached a settlement with Rupert Murdoch‘s News Group Newspapers before the trial began.
The settlement included an eight-figure payout and a public apology admitting legal wrongdoing from 1996 to 2011.
In the apology, NGN admitted to “phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information by journalists and private investigators”.
The apology also acknowledged further breaches of the privacy of Prince Harry and his late mother, Princess Diana.
Princess Diana died in August 1997 in a car accident while being followed by photographers.
“NGN further apologizes to the Duke for the impact on him of the extensive coverage and serious intrusion into his private life, as well as that of Diana, Princess of Wales, his late mother, particularly during his younger years,” the apology. reads, in part.
“We acknowledge and apologize for the suffering caused to the Duke and the damage caused to relationships, friendships and family, and have agreed to pay him substantial damages.”
Now, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has shared a statement of his own on Instagram after settling.
“It takes a huge amount of courage to stand up to big media organizations like this and incredible tenacity to win against them,” Charles wrote alongside a screenshot of the BBC’s caption, which noted that Harry would pay “substantial damages”.
“It’s wonderful that Harry has also secured an apology from his mother,” continued Charles, “I’m sure she would be extremely touched, and suitably proud too.”
“Really good,” he concluded the statement.
