Robert Pattinson Twilight Haters: ‘Still Stuck On That S––t?’

Robert Pattinson has a message for Dusk haters.

“I love when people keep telling me, ‘Man Dusk destroyed the vampire genre,” said the 38-year-old actor in an interview with GQ Spain posted on Tuesday, January 21st. “Are you still on the s––t? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.”

Pattinson became famous for his role as the vampire Edward Cullen The Twilight Saga moviesthe first of which hit theaters in 2008. He starred alongside Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in all five films of the saga, which grossed over $3 billion worldwide, although critical and fan reactions remain mixed to this day.

Although Dusk gave Pattinson his big break, according to the filmmaker, the franchise could have looked completely different Catherine Hardwickewho directed the first film.

During November 2023 appearance in “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Hardwicke revealed that the film’s studio, Summit Entertainment, initially didn’t think Pattinson was the right choice for Edward.

“They called me back and were like, ‘Do you think you can make this guy look good?'” she said of the studio’s reaction to Pattinson’s audition video. “I said, ‘Yes, I do.’ Did you see his cheekbones? We do the hair and everything and he’ll start working out and he’ll be gorgeous.”

Hardwicke then had to convince the executives that Pattinson was the man for the role after failing to impress them in person.

“They didn’t believe it at first. He was walking there with a dirty shirt,” she said. “It was Rob.

Pattinson also fought the studio’s direction for the original film, which wanted to lean towards a more angsty aesthetic. “I wanted to make it as artful as possible,” Pattinson said GQ (for Variety) in February 2022. “We had this weird tension where the studio was afraid to make things a little too emo and stuff. I thought that was the only way to play it. I spent so much time (on set) furious… I can’t believe how I acted half the time.”
