J Sainsbury is cutting 3,000 jobs as the UK’s second largest supermarket seeks to cut costs and streamline its business.
The job cuts, which amount to 2 percent of the group’s workforce, will result from the closure of the remaining retail cafes and major changes in management.
About 20 percent of senior management jobs are expected to be cut, At Sainsbury’s said Thursday.
The decision comes after the company said last year that it would cut costs by £1bn over the next three years.
The restructuring also comes amid what chief executive Simon Roberts called a “very difficult cost environment” as retailers grapple with rising costs and taxes.
The grocery company said it was revamping the structure of its management teams to “support faster decision-making and drive performance” at Sainsbury’s and Argos, which it also owns.
This will lead to fewer, larger head office jobs with clear responsibilities, the company said, adding that the changes will take effect in the coming months.
Roberts said the business “has to make tough decisions about where we can invest and where we need to do things differently to make our business more efficient and effective”.
