Horror isn’t a genre you’d normally associate with music, although there are some killer musicals out there, including old classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and newer features like Anna and the Apocalypse. The only problem with horror musicals, however, is that they tend to focus on Broadway-style bite rather than bloodshed. If you are like me and have been searching perfect a combination of melodies and terror, you’re in luck: Repo! Genetic opera now streaming for free on Tubi.

The Repo Conspiracy! Genetic opera

Based on the musical of the same name Repo! Genetic opera takes place in a bleak future where most of humanity has been wiped out due to widespread organ failure. The unscrupulous GeneCo will transplant organs to those with cash, saving lives while creating a culture of hedonistic body modification. But when someone misses a payment, those organs can be harvested, and when GeneCo’s founder receives a fatal diagnosis, he collides with his Repo Man, which changes everything.

Cast Repo! Genetic opera it’s small but full of familiar faces, including surprise appearances by Paris Hilton and even a cameo from Joan Jett. She plays our main heroine Spy Kids veteran Alexa Vegas and horror icon Bill Moseley memorably play one of the failed members of GeneCo. Meanwhile, the titular Repo plays Buffy the Vampire Slayer the legend of Anthony Stewart Head and the dying CEO is played by Paul Sorvino, who has not been so perfectly perfect since Baz Luhrmann. Romeo + Juliet.

The failure of the cult

Despite this stacked cast, Repo! Genetic opera was a box office bomb mainly due to its very limited theatrical release. With a budget of $8.5 million, the film grossed only $188,126 (no, that’s not a typo). Fortunately, the film found new life on DVD and Blu-Ray and has since gained an intense cult following that many liken to The Rocky Horror picture showanother bizarre horror musical that became more popular over time.

The critics certainly didn’t know what to make of it Repo! Genetic opera: on Rotten tomatoesthe film has only a 37 percent critical score. In general, critics grudgingly praised the film for its style, but derided it for being crass and insubstantial in terms of its narrative. What’s notable, however, is that the film has a 73% audience rating via Popcornmeter, which shows how much more it resonated with general audiences than with critics (who are historically very hard on horror films).

Now it’s time to answer the question you’ve probably been yelling at the screen: why? hell I recommend you watch Repo! Genetic operaa movie that failed to make even $200,000 at the box office and is generally panned by critics? For one thing, the music is surprisingly catchy. That might not sound like much, but given how much the lyrics to “Things You See In A Graveyard” live in my head rent-free, I can’t help but recommend this film to another horror fiend looking for a fresh ear bag. candy.

Additionally, while Repo! Genetic opera has some terrible performances (Paris Hilton deservedly earned a Golden Raspberry Award for worst supporting actress), it also has some memorably wonderful ones. Paul Sorvino does a great job of reading lines and snoring some killer tunes while chewing every bit of scenery he can find, and I truly have never found this talented actor so captivating. As far as Anthony Stewart Head is concerned, it is incredibly rewarding as a Buffy fan to see him shed his constant librarian persona and play against type as a kind of assassin with a heart of gold.

Finally, as a horror fan, I have to recommend Repo! Genetic opera for trying something else. This is a genre full of tired tropes and hackneyed ideas… like how many times do I care about teenagers being chased through the woods or sharks terrorizing a small town? Repo! it has big swings that don’t always connect, but it has the benefit of being completely unique… the kind of ambitious horror freakshow splatterfest that we may never see another director attempt to create.

REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA CHECK THE SCORE

Can you find? Repo! Genetic opera as riveting as I am, or will you want the Repo Man to come and take your eyes while you watch? You won’t know until you stream it for free on Tubi. After you realize you’ll never see something this weird again, you might be left with a void that even GeneCo couldn’t quite fill.
