Devin Haney referred to himself as a “victim” in an interview today, spending much of the time talking about his fight against Ryan Garcia, saying he had been “misled” due to his positive PED test.
Haney sounded like he was trying to use Ryan’s positive test to explain his loss and make fans believe that’s why he was defeated last April.
It seemed like Devin was trying to cover up his loss to erase it from the minds of fans, who sympathized with his “victim” of the cheating storyline. Better to move on and focus on fighting instead of continuing to talk about the PED angle. Fans see that as Haney playing the victim, trying to avoid taking the blame for not putting up a better fight against Ryan.
I just wonder what Haney evokes in terms of excuses if he loses his two fights in 2025 to José Ramírez in May and Ryan García in October. Will Devin take the blame or find a reason why he was hit?
Haney says he wants to show the boxing world “how great” he is, which is funny because he was never seen as “great” even before his loss to Garcia. Devin’s victory over Vasily Lomachenko was controversial in the eyes of many fans, who saw it as a theft. Haney looked just as bad and was repeatedly wobbled in his fight against Jorge Linares, 35, on May 29, 2021.
Devin’s best race wins:
– King Program: 35
– George Kambosos Jr. x 2
– Jorge Linares: 35
– Vasili Lomachenko: *controversial
– José Díaz
If you remove Haney’s questionable victory over Lomachenko, his resume is very thin, with no quality wins. Kambosos cannot be considered quality because he was just an ordinary fighter until he pulled off an upset against Teofimo Lopez.
Kambosos’ record is 1-3 in his last four fights. It should be 0-4 because his only win in the last three years was a controversial 12-round majority decision against Maxi Hughes.
“I want to continue to show the world how great I am and turn non-believers into believers,” Devin Haney told the Ring Magazine Podcast. “They want to see if I’m the same. After I was cheated on, there are question marks.
“They want to see if I’m the same Devin or a better Devin. He (Ryan) also has question marks. The world wants to see if he is the same when he stops using drugs. Just from my experience, being a victim of deception, knowing how important it is to be in that ring and be clean to be on equal terms.
“I want to be an advocate for clean athletes in general, especially in boxing. We are there receiving punishment. What better time (to take a stand) when you see a guy (Ryan Garcia) cheat and get suspended. It is the most important moment in boxing. The whole world saw it. I think what better time than now,” Haney said.
