WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has asked U.S. government agencies on Friday to eliminate jobs and offices related to diversity, equity and inclusion programs, according to a memo published by the Office of the Executive Director. Staff shown.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
Trump, a Republican, has issued a series of executive orders seeking to dismantle DEI programs since taking office on Monday.
DEI programs seek to advance opportunities for women, ethnic minorities, LGBT people and other underrepresented groups. Human rights advocates argue that such programs, generally supported by Democrats, are necessary to address long-standing inequality and racism.
Trump and his allies say the DEI programs unfairly discriminate against some Americans and undermine the importance of candidates for hiring or promotion.
SUBJECT VOLUME
“According to that order, every agency, department, or commission head shall take action to eliminate, to the extent permitted by law, all offices and positions of DEI, DEIA, and environmental justice ‘ within sixty days,” said the memo. .
EXPECTATION
Trump has also pressed the private sector to join his attack on DEI. Human rights advocates say her action marks a major setback in decades-long efforts to ensure equality in government employment and contracting.
It was not immediately clear from the memo how many DEI employees each state agency has.
