The administration of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has fired more than a dozen lawyers of the Department of Justice who worked in two criminal cases against him.
They were dismissed after the interim attorney general James Mchenry concluded that it could not be trusted “to faithfully implement the president’s agenda due to his important role in the president’s prosecution,” said an official of the department to the US partner of the BBC, CBS News.
The lawyers were part of former special lawyer Jack Smith, who investigated the alleged mismanagement of Trump’s classified documents and his alleged attempt to cancel his electoral defeat of 2020.
Monday’s shots are immediately effective.
Smith was appointed special lawyer in 2022 to supervise the two cases of the Department of Justice to Trump. The president had promised to say goodbye “in two seconds” to assume the position, But he resigned before his inauguration.
Both cases resulted in criminal charges against Trump, who declared himself innocent.
But the cases closed after their November electoral victory. Prosecutors wrote that the regulations of the Department of Justice do not allow the prosecution of a acting president.
It was not clear immediately which members of Mr. Smith’s team were fired.
Many of those who worked on Smith teams were prosecutors of professional corruption and national security who had worked in several administrations and were appointed for cases.
According to the reports, they received a letter on Monday that said that their role in the investigation and prosecution of the president made them inadequate to work in the department.
“The dismissal of prosecutors due to the cases in which they were assigned to work is unacceptable,” said former US prosecutor Joyce Vance to NBC News. “It is anti-regulation of the law; it is antidemocracy.”
The shots follow an important reallocation of some of the main officials of the Department of Justice with experience in a wide range of fields, including national security and public corruption. On Monday, one of them, the head of the Public Integrity Section, resigned.
Trump and his team have accused the Department of Justice of pursuing cases politically motivated against him, his associates and republicans. Trump promised an immediate review of the department, which he has been “armed” against him, while campaigning for re -election.
His nominated to direct the Department of Justice, Pam Bondi, He has echoed Trump’s opinion that federal prosecutions against him were political persecutionsaying that the department “had been armed for years and years and years.”
Smith has publicly defended his work. In a letter that accompanies the final draft of his report on Trump’s actions after the 2020 elections, he wrote: “The (Trump) claim that my decisions as a prosecutor were influenced or directed by the Biden administration or other political actors , in a word, ridiculous. “
Also on Monday, the main federal prosecutor of Washington DC announced the launch of an internal review of collection decisions behind hundreds of cases of disturbances of the Capitol, according to CBS.
The US prosecutor Edward Martin, appointed by Trump, ordered prosecutors in his office to deliver documents, emails and other information related to the decision of the previous administration to present a position of obstruction against more than 200 accused of attack of Capitolos .
