A professor at Howard and former Miss Kansas contestant known for his brilliant smile and enthusiasm for life was one of the victims in the collision in Wednesday’s air between an army helicopter and an American Airlines plane nearby Reagan National Airport.
Kiah Duggins, 30, was appointed victim in the disaster by the president of the University of Howard, Ben Vinson III, who requested privacy and respect for his family, students and colleagues during this difficult time.
In a statement, the university said that Duggins should begin a new chapter as a professor at the Faculty of Law of Howard this fall.

“As a civil rights lawyer, she dedicated her career to fighting unconstitutional police and unfair money bail practices in Tennessee, Texas and Washington, DC,” says the statement. “The plans to honor their legacy will be shared in the next few days.”
Duggins was also a civil rights Lawyer at the non -profit Civil Rights Center, based in Washington DC
The group’s website says it worked with the Northern Callifornia ACLU and Neufeld, Scheck and Bustin LLP to “challenge police behavior and other damage to the criminal legal system” before coming to the civil rights body. He studied the abolition and abolition movement of the Prison Industrial Complex as a law for Black Lives’s partner, a black release group.
She won him lawyer title of the Harvard Law Faculty, where she served as president of the Harvard Legal Aid Office. Before that, he obtained a degree from Wichita State University and completed a Fulbright subsidy in Taiwan, according to the civil rights body.
Larry Strong, who was the director of the Duggins local contest when she competed for Miss Kansas and Miss Butler County, told Kbtx that Duggins had “such a brilliant future ahead.”
In a Facebook post, he described it as “Miss Butler County 2014, 2015”.
“Kiah was one of the 10 best finalists in 2014 and 2015 in the Miss Kansas Pageant. He was preparing to be a law professor at Howard University in Autumn. Keep your family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. “
Annie Montgomery, minister of the Biblical Church of the Tabernacle in Wichita, told Kmuw that she will remember Duggins for her brilliant smile and enthusiasm for life.
“Kiah was the most beautiful young woman inside and out,” said Montgomery. “He was adventurous. He made friends so easily. He had the type of personality that you simply could not resist.”

Lacey Cruse, a former Sedgwick County Commissioner, described Duggins as “a brave and beautiful soul, a light in the fight for civil rights.”
“His loss is heartbreaking, not only for his family and friends, but for all those who believe in justice and equality,” he wrote on Facebook. “That his work, his message and his spirit continue to inspire and create changes. He left too soon but never forgot.”
Duggins was one of the 67 people to lose their lives in The disaster. The cause of the collision is being investigated.
