Cory Haynos was a toast of the US National Development Camp just before he was killed When the gloss of American Airlines 5342 crashed into the river Potorac.
Haynos, 16, was one of about 40 skaters who were invited to participate in a special training in Tábor on Wednesday, January 29, showcase for the brightest young skaters that the country can offer.
During the Haynos session, a triple axel, one of the most difficult jumps to figure skating, impressively hit, in front of the esteemed panel of coaches.
“I watched him work on it all week, I just fought,” Mark Mitchellone of the coaches in the camp, he said The New York Times On Thursday, January 30. “So when I saw him, I just said,“ Oh my God! Cory just landed on a triple axel! “And he was so happy, just so happy. ”
Mitchell said “the level of excitement was out of the charts” in the camp that closed the same day Cory and his parents, Roger and Stephanie HaynosThey all died in an aircraft crash, which also took the life of at least 13 other figure skaters.
Cory was a member of skating in northern Virginia, who mourned on Thursday over the loss of figure skaters.
“This heartbreaking accident shook the local skating community in Virginia, Maryland, the Columbia district – as in Boston and all over the country,” wrote the club via Instagram.
The Boston Skating Club also lost six members of their community in an aircraft crash, including 16 -year -old figure skaters Spencer Lane and Far.
“Our hearts go to families, friends and loved ones that we mourn in this unimaginable grief,” the North Virginia Skating Club continued. “When we continue to process this tragedy, we honor memories of those we have lost – their passion for sport, friendship that cultivated, and the joy they brought on the ice.” Their presence on our ice rinks and in our community is deeply felt and their absence is indescribable. ”
IN Facebook post Roger’s cousin shares on Thursday Matthew Alan LaraviereCory’s father was remembered as a man with “absolute love for his family and determination to provide only the best for his wife and children.”
“Roger and his wife died home with their son from the American Skating Championship in Kansas,” he read the post. “Cory was an amazing skater with a very clear future with the American skating team.” Recently, in an interview with Roger, he was enthusiastic about the future of his son, and he seemed to be honored, that with his wife and I planned to travel north to see Cory to play. We all expected Cory to represent our country in the US Olympics in the future. ”
A total of 67 people died on Wednesday’s air accident, including the above -mentioned figure skaters.
