Venezuela has released six American detainees after conversations in Caracas between President Nicolás Maduro and a senior official of the Trump administration.
The launch of men was announced on social networks by Donald Trump and his special envoy, Richard Grenelll.
Grenell, who published online a photo of the six aboard his plane, said they had spoken by phone to President Trump to thank him.
Previously, the White House had asked Venezuela to release “American hostages”, in addition to accepting Venezuelan criminals deported by the United States, or face consequences.
Grenelll did not appoint the six men, who were seen dressed in light blue outfits used by the Venezuelan penitivitor system.
“We are upside down and we headed home with these 6 American citizens,” Grenelll published in X. “They simply talked to @realdonaldtrump and could not stop thanking him.”
Trump praised the move in a separate position, saying that Grenell was bringing “six hostages to Venezuela’s house.”
Venezuelan state media said the discussions with President Trump’s envoy had been respectful.
In January, Caracas announced the capture of a group of “mercenaries” that included US citizens.
Maduro swore last month for a third term as Venezuelan president, six months after the disputed elections that the opposition and the international community say he lost.
The official results of the July 2024 elections have been widely rejected by the international community, including the United States.
Grenelll’s visit was not referring to the American recognition of Maduro as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, the White House Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on Friday, said Friday.
