Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops on the border between the United States and Mexico in exchange for a delay of one month in the threatened tariffs of President Donald Trump, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday.
Sheinbaum made The announcement on social networks on Monday morning, approximately 12 hours before tariffs came into force. Trump and Sheinbaum spoke on Monday and agreed that Mexico will do more to combat drug trafficking in the United States, and that the United States will intensify efforts to block the flow of firearms in Mexico.
Sheinbaum also said that the United States and Mexico officials were starting conversations about broader trade and security problems.
Trump confirmed the deal in his own publication in Social truthdescribing the call with Sheinbaum as a “very friendly conversation.”

The agreement occurs a few days after Trump announced 25% tariffs both in Mexico and Canada, as well as 10% tariffs in China. Trump says he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Monday, but the couple did not reach an agreement. He says they will speak again on Monday.
The tariffs will enter into force at midnight on Tuesday.
