The main road collapses in part as Australian floods worse

The sections of an important Australian road have been dragged, since the floods in Queensland worsen.

The torrential rain in the north of the state has claimed a life so far and forced thousands to flee their homeswith communities in Townsville, Ingham and Cardwell among the most affected.

Emergency responders have continued working throughout the day, and SES received 480 calls to receive help on Sunday night until Monday and making 11 fast water rescues. However, generalized power cuts continue to be reported, which makes it impossible for some communities to request help.

Ses’s attached commissioner Shane Chelepy urged people to remain attentive and verify their neighbors whenever possible. He added that some 400 people were now being housed in evacuation centers in Townsville, Ingham and Cardwell.

Located in the tropics, the north of Queensland is vulnerable to destructive cyclones, storms and floods.

But climatic scientists have warned that the warmest oceans and a hotter planet are creating the conditions for more intense and frequent extreme rain events.

Meteorologists say that current floods could be the worst to reach the region in more than 60 years.
