President Donald Trump On Monday he agreed to stop the implementation of the United States duty in imports of Canada For at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying.
The pause was announced on a Tweet by Trudeau hours after Trump and the president of Mexico said Trump would pause for a month of tariffs planned in imports of Mexico.
In both cases, pauses occurred after these countries agreed to take measures to avoid mortal opioid fentanyl in the United States.
Trump said Saturday that he would impose 25% duty on goods from Mexico and Canadaand 10% of tariffs on goods imported from Porcelain. Trump had also planned to impose a 10% rate on Canada’s energy resources.
Trudeau warned on Saturday that his country would implement a 25% tariff against $ 155 billion in US goods. In retaliation for Trump’s rates.
But on a tweet on Monday, announcing the pause, Trudeau wrote: “I just had a good call with President Trump.”
Trudeau said that Canada had made new commitments “to name a fentanyl tsar.”
“Canada is implementing our border plan of $ 1.3 billion, reinforcing the border with new helicopters, technology and personnel, a better coordination with our US partners and an increase in resources to stop the flow of fentanyl,” wrote the prime minister. “Almost 10,000 first -line staff are and will work to protect the border.”
“The proposed tariffs will stop for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau wrote.
Canada had detailed that border plan on an official website on December 18, six weeks before Trump announced the rates.
Trump in a real social post on Monday wrote on Monday: “Canada agreed to make sure we have a safe northern border, and finally finish the mortal drug flagelo such as the fentanyl they have been arriving in our country, killing hundreds of thousands of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities throughout our country. “
“I am very satisfied with this initial result, and the tariffs announced on Saturday will stop for a period of 30 days to see if a final economic agreement with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote. “Justice for all!”
Earlier on Monday, Trump stopped tariffs on imports from Mexico after the president of that country, Claudia Sheinbaum, said she would immediately send 10,000 soldiers to her northern border to fentanyl shipments to the United States.
The vast majority of fentanyl seized on US borders comes from Mexico.
In 2024, more than 21,100 pounds of fentanil were seized by US authorities on the border with Mexico, compared to only about 43 pounds seized on the Canadian border.
