Washington, DC, the city councilor, Trayon White, faces a possible expulsion from the leadership of the city in the midst of a current corruption trial on alleged bribery positions.
The FBI White arrested in August 2024, claiming that he took more than $ 150,000 in bribes to influence the hiring of the city. While the trial has not yet begun, the FBI revealed evidence that shows White accepting envelopes full of cash from an office informant. The City Council will vote on White’s expulsion later on Tuesday.
“This is a corruption par excellence,” said Council President Phil Mendelson, in a December statement. “There is only one remedy: eliminating the corruption of our body. This incident has damaged the public confidence necessary for the government to work well.”
Despite the charges and level evidence against him, White was re -elected for the City Council in November, only three months after his arrest. His federal trial will begin in January 2026. He declared himself innocent.
“I feel sure that the people of Ward 8 have spoken. I feel that I will win for a landslide, but I am still humble and prayed. I hope I send a strong message to the DC Council to maintain the decisions in the hands of the people “. White told Wjla on election day after the results made it clear that he would win.

White’s expulsion would require a unanimous vote of the other 11 members of The City Council, And the public statements of the council members do not look good for the target.
“Councilor White betrayed the confidence of his staff, the council, the agencies and, above all, the residents of Chamber 8,” said Councilor Kenyan McDuffie, a Democrat, at a preliminary hearing last week.
Mendelson, also a Democrat, echoed McDuffie’s skepticism in a statement.
“The public (has to rely on the government, they have to trust the legislature, they have to trust those who are chosen,” he said.
Other members expressed their hope that White would resign before the Council is forced to take action.
